We honor the self determination, perseverance and courage of the many that sought freedom and dedicate the way forward to promoting, partnering, and participating in cultural heritage tourism, civil rights awareness and international education.  

 

The Detroit River Project was founded by Kimberly Simmons a renowned historian, community/social activist, and decendant of travelers on the Underground railroad.

THE DETROIT RIVER PROJECT is a Michigan non profit organization, dedicated to education, research, and celebration of heritage, culture, justice and heroics. Our primary focus is the public enlightenment and education on our region’s cultural heritage with emphasis on the first movement in the battle for justice and civil rights known as the Underground Railroad. 

 

The Detroit River Project mission is education, research and cultural heritage programs focusing on: 1)Obtaining International Heritage Designation for the Detroit River 
2) A mural project telling the story of the people and history of Detroit and the Midwest 3) Establishment of an International
